Coffee farming in Ntongwe is a vital source of income for local farmers, benefiting from the region’s fertile volcanic soils, favorable altitude, and consistent rainfall. Farmers cultivate mainly Arabica Bourbon varieties, prized for their rich flavor, floral aroma, and balanced acidity. Cultivation practices emphasize careful harvesting of fully ripe cherries, followed by wet processing to maintain quality.
In Rwanda, the farm-gate price for ripe coffee cherries is set at RWF 600 per kg (about $0.42 USD per kg), though competitive buyers often pay RWF 700–800 per kg (about $0.49–$0.56 USD per kg). On the retail market, roasted coffee sells for $8.20 to $14.47 USD per kg, making it a valuable commodity for both local consumption and export.
